Cold weather straight ahead.
Bring it on!
The winter wonderland isn’t all about shovelling the driveway and braving slippery sidewalks to take the dog out. There’s more, much more! Whether you’re snowshoeing through the deep stuff or getting cozy in front of a fire while snowflakes blanket the landscape, winter is the season of romance. Oh, baby, it’s cold outside!
Here are 3 reasons to love a winter weekend getaway…
Stay at a Romantic Inn or B&B
It’s hard not to feel starry-eyed (and in the mood) when you’re staying at a luxurious inn in a charming small town in the country. You’ve got soft linens, plush robes, and a gourmet breakfast to linger over, all within a quiet walk to the historic downtown. It’s peaceful here in Cobourg. The air is fresh. The people are friendly, and there’s just no reason to rush.
A couple sweet picks of ours: Twin Maples Bed and Breakfast By the Lake is a lovely Canadian century home with urban flair. Gorgeous sitting room with fireplace and comfy couch and chairs. Breakfast indulgence could be Cinnamon French Toast Bake with Walnuts.
The Woodlawn Inn is a beautifully restored heritage mansion built in 1835. Antique furnishings, in-suite Jacuzzis, and a chef’s tasting menu to swoon over. Innkeeper and sommelier, Stephen Della Casa, has a 3,000-bottle wine cellar, too, so ask and you shall receive!
Bonus: You don’t need to take a plane. Cobourg is just an hour east of Toronto along Lake Ontario.
Raise Your Heartbeat with Outdoor Fun
Dark chocolate can be a tasty aphrodisiac, but exercising with your partner is even better. You’ll release those feel-good endorphins that can lead to a healthier relationship (and a boost in circulation to all the right places). Plus, a little healthy competition is good for you. Just remember that alpha males are always happier when you let them win.
Outdoor fun in the winter will ramp up your vitamin D intake, too, so head outside for some skating at the old-fashioned oval in Cobourg’s Rotary Harbourfront Park with a view of the lake. Or try snowshoeing or cross-country skiing along the wooded trails of nearby Northumberland Forest and watch for deer and darting rabbits. There are lookout points along the way where you can hold hands for a moment and take in the natural beauty.
A sigh of contentment. A shared kiss. What more could you want?
Do Something Special for Her (or Him!)
If you’re serious about scoring points with your partner, do something a little different (and absolutely heartfelt). Buy a small padlock and head to Cobourg’s Rotary Harbourfront Park bridge where you can lock your love, as per the European custom. You lock your padlock along the chain on the bridge—a symbol of your devotion. Then stroll to a main street café and warm up with a hot drink or festive beverage. If it’s not overkill, now’s the time to recite a short poem…
Dark, cold days of winter be damned. These warming trends will ignite some passion and celebrate the season.
