Victoria Hall to Celebrate 150 years in May 2010April 19, 2009, 1:29 pm

Victoria Hall, located at 55 King Street West, has presided over the main street of Cobourg for almost 150 years. In the 1850’s, Cobourg’s leading citizens decided to express their confidence in the future by building themselves a fine town hall. They held a design competition which was won by the famous architect Kivas Tully. From 1856, when the cornerstone was laid by Sir Allan McNab, until 1860 when it was opened, the building was under steady construction by the local builders David and William Burnet.

Edward Albert, the young Prince of Wales and future King Edward VII, came to Cobourg during his Canadian Tour of 1860. On September 6 he officially opened Victoria Hall - named for his mother, Queen Victoria. Much to the delight of the local citizenry he remained for the Grand Ball and Midnight Supper.

In honour of the 150th. Anniversary of the Grand Opening of Victoria Hall, the Victoria Hall Volunteers have booked an Anniversary Grand Ball for Saturday, May 29, 2010. Early discussions suggested that this event could be expanded to include more members of the community by organizing varied events during the week and on the weekend - designating it Victoria Hall Week 2010: 150th Anniversary Celebration of Victoria Hall. The week’s events will be a celebration of the history, architecture, culture, heritage and arts related to Victoria Hall and its official opening.
