Exciting events all year round
Festivals in Cobourg bring visitors to join the party, and experience the culture and ambiance of our friendly, small-town life. The setting on Lake Ontario is ideal for all kinds of waterfront activities, including beach volleyball competition and the multi-sport triathlon in the summer, the Dragon boat Festival in September, and the popular Waterfront Festival over the Canada Day weekend. Huge tents line the harbourfront for artisans, food, beer and entertainment. Midway rides and games stretch out on the pier. A traditional Canada Day parade with marching bands, clowns and fire trucks is capped off with spectacular fireworks over the harbour, where people gather on the beach with blankets and lawn chairs to take in the show.
Amazing musical talent from the area’s best artists! This annual CME event showcases diverse music genres on stages downtown Cobourg – in parks, restaurants, and the fire hall on the May 17. Hello, summer! Restaurants offer specialty menus to complement performance styles, from folk to rock, to pop and jazz, and more, to stimulate the senses. If you’re into live music, this experience is for you.
The sound of pipes and drums, the flash of Scottish tartan kilts, strongmen facing off in a tug of war – a traditional Highland Games is something to
see. With a nod to tradition, highland dancers compete over swords and high-step to jigs and reels; pipe and drum bands wear their finery in the heat and showcase their music and marching talent; big lads toss huge wooden poles for pride and prizes. There’s plenty to clap and cheer about, not to mention the Scottish treats of chips, gravy and haggis. Sample a wee bit of Scotland.
The most popular event in Cobourg draws huge crowds and sends up a fantastic salute to Canada Day. The annual Waterfront Festival transforms the harbour with tents for arts and crafts, entertainment and a midway with games and rides that extends out to the pier with a phenomenal view of the lake. Civic Canada Day festivities include a traditional parade of marching bands, antique cars, floats and clowns, there’s a pancake breakfast in Victoria Park, and a fireworks show bursting over the harbour at dusk. Bring your blanket and watch from the beach.
Ever tried to build a 20-foot dinosaur? Well dig out your shovels and sand pails for some good dirty fun -- and a chance to win prizes and glory at the annual Sandcastle Festival in July. Beach time has never been better! You can play in the sand and impress your kids, go for a swim in the lake and watch a movie on the beach at dusk. Sweet!
